Five years ago, the Center for Independent Living of Broward County launched a leadership development program for one simple purpose, to create more advocates for individuals with disabilities.

Advocates are powerful. They come together to create the necessary catalysts for positive change. Often underserved and underrepresented, approximately 2.6 million people in the State of Florida have a disability. Of that 2.6 million people, only an estimated 19.8% are working full or part-time. Access to employment is essential for independence. By creating more advocates within our communities, the idea is that barriers fall and access to things that foster independence, like employment, become easier.

About Leadership CILB
The Leadership CILB Program is a special leadership opportunity for individuals with disabilities in Broward County. Created for young professionals aged 21-30, the program develops individuals’ personal and professional abilities while also fostering a networking of disability advocates in our community.

Take Action
The ten-month leadership program begins with an Orientation in August and an Opening Retreat in September. The one monthly program day per month exposes participants to the competencies necessary for strong leadership and advocacy. During the program year, participants also work together on a community project designed to put their leadership into practice. The program culminates with a graduation reception where class participants mingle with Leadership CILB alumni.

Eligible participants must:
• Have a disability.
• Be between the ages of 21-30 (exceptions can be made on a case-by-case basis).
• Commit to full participation and active involvement in the program (Opening Retreat, monthly Program Days, community project activities, and Graduation).
• Arrange for his/her own transportation to and from Program Day sites and other program meeting locations.
• Be willing to be an ambassador of CILB and spokesperson for disability issues.
