Often, we get asked by our clients to open a Twitter account. Less often do we get asked “Should we open a Twitter account.”  The answer to that is “It depends.”  If you’re going to use it, don’t abuse it. Learn about the platform and take advantage of it to grow your business, better your business, and be entertained while you’re at it.

So, how does one do that with Twitter?

The nature of Twitter is fast-paced and “of the moment”. You won’t get much ROI on your efforts if you’re just linking Facebook content, pushing out your latest product, or sharing information with people in the Twitterverse who could find anywhere else.

Entrepreneur, Innovator, Elon Musk is not only a good example of what private investment and public partnerships can accomplish, he is showing us how Twitter can be an effective tool in relating to your audience and better serving your customers.

Musk received a complaint from a customer about other Tesla drivers using spaces at charging stations. In a mere 6 days, he implemented a new policy to help curb this irksome phenomena.

You can read the full story at the link below. For now, we’d like to share 6 Golden Rules for Using Twitter as a Business Owner:

  1. Really go for it. Your ROI won’t be what you want it to be if your “I” is minimal. Invest in planning your content. Invest in setting aside time to get to know the platform and really work it.
  2. Show your personality. If your personality is lackluster, create one for your business on social media. Be funny, be honest, but be respectful.
  3. Interaction is Key. Just pushing content won’t do. You have to read what your audience, customers, and prospects are saying and sharing. Like their tweets, respond to their tweets, mention those who add value to your business with their ideas, suggestions, and promotion of your content.
  4. Timing is everything. No, you don’t have to be on Twitter every day, but IT’S A GOOD IDEA. Offer real-time updates on services, new projects, new products, new people. Test out ideas for your business. If you aren’t, be on at the same time so your audience knows when to look for content from you.
  5. Do it yourself (or let someone who is as good as you do it for you). Your employees and interns may be able to show you how Twitter works. Take their advice! But don’t hand it over to anyone but those you absolutely trust. This is an opportunity for you to have direct contact with your audience, customers, and clients. You can get valuable information about your product and operations (Just Like Elon Musk!).
  6. Take Action, Don’t React. You don’t have to take every idea suggested by the Twittersphere, but don’t let the good ones go. Elon Miusk must get a bajillion suggestions a day. Statistically speaking, they can’t all be good. You don’t want to change your business every day just because someone said to, but you should be open enough to recognize the good suggestions when they come across your Twitter feed.

We hope this helps!
