Fort Lauderdale, FL (February 6, 2018) – The Fort Lauderdale Country Club has rounded out its 90th anniversary celebration, which kicked off in January 2017, with a futuristic themed party on Friday, January 19, 2018 that celebrated a look at the next 90 years and the accomplishments to come. The Country Club has much to look back on, including a diverse membership and a deep community impact.
“After 90 years in operation, Fort Lauderdale Country Club is an institution, both in Broward county and in the traditions of golf,” said Michael O’Brien, General Manager of the Fort Lauderdale Country Club. “During this time, we have been named the two best golf courses in Broward County, and we have also evolved into a true ‘golf club for golfers,’ featuring a diverse member base that includes more than 200 active women plus young adults and golfers of all ages.”
Early in its founding, the Fort Lauderdale Country Club experienced several setbacks, including the aftermath of the “Great Miami” hurricane in September 1926, and the failure of three of its banking institutions. Despite these obstacles, the Club became part of Fort Lauderdale’s booming tourist industry and flourished, which eventually led to hosting the PGA Senior Year Championship in the 1950s and building the largest ladies’ golfing program in South Florida, which currently boasts 130 members.
“Contrary to popular belief, golf is not a dying sport; it is a changing sport,” said O’Brien. “Fort Lauderdale Country Club is finding new ways to appeal to a wider variety of golfers to propel its market presence forward for many years to come.”
In addition to leading the South Florida golfing community, the Fort Lauderdale Country Club is also deeply committed to strengthening the community. With its active ladies’ member base, the Country Club has hosted the Broward Women’s Amateur Tournament for the last two years. This past year, the Club further expanded its reach to a younger generation of golfers by hosting The First Tee of Broward County.
In the past year alone, the Fort Lauderdale Country Club has helped local nonprofits raise approximately $750,000 to support their causes and missions.
The Fort Lauderdale Country Club is the oldest private country club in Broward County. Founded in 1926, the club is the only one in Broward County with 36 holes of manicured championship golf, a practice range and practice putting greens. Located just 5 miles from Fort Lauderdale Beach, it is in a convenient location for golfers in both eastern and western Broward County.
